Thirsty?
April 28th, 2008

A recent study from the UK found, that the common pinch-test, does not make a reliable statement about your horse’s dehydration. So far, to find out if your horse needs water you would have taken some skin between thumb and index finger and then let go to see how long it takes until the skin returns to normal. If that took unusually long, it was a sign that the horse is dehydrated and needs to drink. However, said study found that the results of this test can vary depending on age of the horse, humidity of the skin and place on the body. According to the researchers it is still best to offer your horse water. If it drinks, it’s dehydrated. Period.

Resistent worms
April 21st, 2008

A recent study of the Gluck Equine Research Centre in Kentucky gives further evidence for the assumption that small strongyles developed a resistance to Ivermectin. Ivermectin has bee the dewormer of choice for most horse owners. The study however showed that after a treatment strongyle eggs reappeared twice as fast as they did in 1980, when Ivermectin first entered the market. The researchers also add that roundworms show a similar immunity and no new effective Treatment has entered the market, yet.
